Reproduce carved Quartz background for
platinum and Diamond Swan pin
This is a platinum brooch/pendant with over 8 carats of diamonds. It also has a Ruby eye, small Emeralds, a few cabochon top black Onyx and many cabochon top Aquamarines.
The background of the piece is made from carved and frosted Quartz and has polished grooves which are carved in the pattern of clouds. Although it is difficult to see it in the picture, the entire piece of Quartz is not flat. It is dished or curved in overall shape. The thickness of the Quartz carving was 1mm (the thickness of a dime) over the entire length of the piece.
The challenge in cutting a piece like this is, making the polished grooves without messing up the frosted area. Or if you make the poished grooves first, how do you frost the background area without messing up the polish in your grooves? I had to solve that problem.
