Replacing 2 broken Opal inlays in a Ring

A jeweler sent this ring to us to repair the 2 broken Opal inlays in the center.

To do so we spend time searching our stock of Opal rough material to find pieces which will match.

Ring with broken Opal inlays

As you can see, the 2 Opal inlays in the center of this ring are broken and cracked.

I will need to spend time searching my stock of rough Opal materials to find pieces which match the others in the ring.

Shows where I have glued in a new Opal inlay with black Epoxy.

Inlaying the new Opal

Here you can see that we have glued the first piece in place using Epoxy which is colored black to enhance the color of the Opal.

We will also be adding a gold bar to separate the pieces of Opal, which is very common in Opal inlay jewelry.

Shows me trimming down the tops of the Opal to make the inlay flush with the top of the ring.

Trimming down the inlay

Here I am trimming down the excess Opal on a diamond cutting wheel.

After trimming

You can see that most of the excess Opal has been trimmed down.

The next step is sanding and polishing.

Shows the finishe ring with 2 new Opal inlays in the center which match the other inlays.

The finished Opal inlays

You can see that the 2 new Opal inlays in the center match the pieces on either side.

The ring is now like new again!
