Repairing a chip on an emerald cut blue Sapphire

A jeweler in Denver sent me this emerald cut blue Sapphire to remove a good sized chip in the pavilion.

As always, they wanted the stone to be kept at large as possible with a miniumum of weight loss and minimum of loss of dimensions.

You can see the chip at the top along the side of the emerald cut.

The large chip on the pavilion

As you can see, the chip goes through the girdle.

When the chip goes through the girdle, it is necessary to take the width of the stone in to make the new girdle in that spot.

I take the girdle in very carefully, and only enough, to just get rid of the chip and keep the size as large as possible.

The chip is now gone

You can see that the chip is now gone and the stone is only a slight amount smaller.

The finished stone

The stone has now been repaired and as you can see, it is a very beautiful Sapphire!
