Meteorite rough material

The type of Meteorite most commonly used in jewelry and inlays is the type of Meteorite known as Octahedrite.

Octahedrite is composed of nickel and iron and a few other trace elements.

When Octahedrite is sanded with a very fine surface and treated with acid, it exhibits a triangular pattern known as Widmanstätten pattern. Click to see a closeup of the pattern.

The use of meteorite in jewelry makes for a great conversation piece. Not many people can say they are wearing something that used to be a shooting star from outer space!

The lower photo shows a side view so that you can see the thickness and also how the cross-hatched pattern runs through the material.

I like this piece of Meteorite material because it shows both the cross-hatched patterning and also the original skin of the Meteorite is showing along the top.
